Is This This Is: Response to Mexico.
Elysium Gallery and Artspaces Experimental Space.
In October 2016 I visited the cultural city of Oaxaco, Mexico that has a fantastic history and tradition of crafts.
Since returning my practice has been influenced by that visit. Fortunately I was offered an experimental space in which to develop new ideas at Elysium Gallery and Artspace. It involved performance, weaving and drawing. The developing ideas resulted in a contemporary twist on back strap weaving and the historical ball game, expressing human involvement, the ancient craft and the darker side of historical human sacrifice and today’s sweat shops, depicted in shadows and charcoal drawings.
